Sora Is Gone: What Musicians Should Use for Music Videos Now

Quick answer: Yes. Sora is shut down. OpenAI closed the Sora apps on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API on September 24, 2026, with no replacement model. For music videos we now use Seedance 2.5 for most work, Kling 3.0 for multi-shot control or 4K, and Veo 3.1 only if a Google AI plan is already paid for.

Sora 2 was in a lot of musicians' toolkits between its September 2025 launch and the spring. Then the app went dark, then the API. This page is the current answer to the two questions we keep getting asked: did it really close, and what do we point a musician at now, in October 2026, with prices checked today.

Our earlier migration notes from the April Sora shutdown are still up in our Sora 2 alternatives guide. That page was written while the API was still alive. This one is written after it died.

Is Sora really shut down, or just the app?

Both are gone. OpenAI's own help center states that the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and that the Sora API was discontinued on September 24, 2026. The API deprecation table lists every Sora 2 model with an empty "recommended replacement" column. There is nothing to migrate to inside OpenAI.

The Sora shutdown ran in three steps:

DateWhat happenedSource
March 24, 2026OpenAI announced the closure on X ("We're saying goodbye to Sora") and gave API developers a six-month deprecation windowNBC News; OpenAI deprecations page

September 24, 2026Videos API and the sora-2, sora-2-pro and all dated snapshots removed from the APIOpenAI deprecations page

The reasons are documented, not rumored. OpenAI told the BBC it discontinued Sora to focus on other work, including robotics "that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks," and the BBC reported that the company will no longer focus on developing video-generation tools at all. The $1 billion Disney partnership that would have put Marvel and Star Wars characters in Sora was wound down at the same time; Reuters reported no money had changed hands.

The money explains the rest. Sensor Tower told the BBC that Sora earned about $1.4 million in net in-app revenue over its life, against $1.9 billion for ChatGPT in the same period. Appfigures put lifetime in-app purchases at roughly $2.1 million and tracked downloads falling from about 3.33 million in November 2025 to about 1.13 million in February 2026. Six months after launch, OpenAI pulled it. Image generation inside ChatGPT was not affected, OpenAI told the BBC. Video is what left.

Can you still get your Sora videos and your money back?

Your videos, probably; your money, maybe. OpenAI's help page, last updated in late September 2026, still points to an Export button at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, and says you get an email when the file is ready. Refunds go through the standard ChatGPT subscription refund process, and any purchased ChatGPT or Sora credits can still be spent on Codex.

Two details matter if you shot a whole video on Sora:

A warning about third-party apps. On October 21, 2026 we still saw "Sora 2" listed in the model menu of at least one video platform. With the API gone, treat any Sora listing as stale until you have personally generated a clip through it and seen the result. We would not count on it.

What did musicians lose when Sora closed?

Four things, and only two of them are hard to replace after the Sora shutdown. Sora 2 generated picture and sound in one pass, let you scan yourself into a reusable "character" (originally called a cameo), gave every clip a built-in feed, and promised licensed Disney characters that never arrived. The one-pass audio and the reusable character are the parts that mattered for music videos.

NBC News described the Sora 2 model at its September 2025 launch as producing higher-quality video with audio and more accurate physics. For musicians, the audio half was mostly a convenience; we replaced the generated sound with the actual track in the edit anyway. The reusable character is the real loss, because it let an artist appear in their own video without a camera. TechCrunch notes that the feature could be made public, so anyone could put your face in their clip, which is also why the app spent its short life in moderation trouble.

The feed never mattered for us. A music video lives on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Spotify Canvas, not inside the tool that rendered it.

What should musicians use instead of Sora in October 2026?

Three tools cover the ground Sora left, and they are not interchangeable. Seedance 2.5 wins on clip length, per-second price and reference control. Kling 3.0 wins on multi-shot storyboarding and native 4K. Veo 3.1 is the sensible choice only if you already pay for a Google AI plan and your song needs a handful of eight-second shots. The table has today's numbers; the dates tell you how fresh each one is.

Every price in that table came from the vendor's own page, read today. Promotions move. Dreamina's 90 percent first-month offer was dated September 23 to October 9, 2026 on the page we read, so the first-month figure may differ at checkout while the per-second math holds. Kling's blog is explicit that the discounted price applies to a first subscription only.

Why do we point most musicians at Seedance first?

Because a music video is long, and the other two tools think in eight to fifteen second pieces. Seedance 2.5 generates 30 seconds in one go, extends to 180 seconds in a beta mode, and accepts up to 50 reference inputs, including audio and video. That means fewer seams to hide, and a face or outfit you can hold across the whole song. It is also the cheapest per generated second of the three on the plans we checked.

We should be plain about our interest. Seedance is the one tool on this page we have an affiliate relationship with, and it is the only affiliate payout this site has ever earned. We would still rank it first for this job without that, and the reasons are above. But you deserve to know.

Now the honest part. Seedance's pricing page leads with a promotional first month and does not state the renewal price on the page we read; you learn it at checkout. Dreamina's own notes on 2.5 say the new version "removes random subtitles and unwanted BGM," which is a polite way of confirming that earlier versions sometimes laid captions and their own music over your shot. For a music video that is a real problem, so the safe habit is to mute generated audio and lay the master track underneath in the edit. Reference audio has its own failure modes, and when the tool ignores your track, the fix is usually on your side (file format, length, a clean intro), not the model's.

One more limit. Seedance is a ByteDance model, and access from the United States has been uneven across the year, with front ends appearing and disappearing. Dreamina says 2.5 is live worldwide. Confirm you can generate from your own connection before you buy a plan; if access changes, the per-second economics don't help you.

For a side-by-side on sync, cost per finished video and character consistency, our Kling vs Seedance test goes deeper than this page needs to.

When is Kling or Veo the better choice?

Pick Kling when the video is a sequence of deliberate shots rather than one long take, or when you need native 4K. Pick Veo 3.1 when you already pay Google $19.99 a month and the song needs a few polished eight-second moments rather than wall-to-wall footage.

Kling's case is control. The 3.0 release on February 5, 2026 added a multi-shot storyboard where you set duration, shot size, perspective, narrative content and camera movement for each shot, plus reference-to-video that pulls a character's look and voice from a clip you upload. That is the closest thing to a director's shot list in any of these tools. Kling's July 2026 pricing post puts native 4K at 30 credits per second, which means a Standard plan's 660 credits buys 22 seconds of 4K. Budget for 1080p and upscale the hero shots.

Commercial rights are clearer at Kling than most people assume. The plan table on Kling's own blog marks generated content on the free Basic tier as not for commercial use, and every paid tier as licensed for commercial use. If you intend to monetize the video, you are on a paid plan from day one.

Veo's case is quality per shot and a bill you may already be paying. Veo 3.1 Quality costs 100 Flow credits for an 8-second clip, and Google AI Pro includes 1,000 monthly credits plus 50 daily credits that don't roll over. That is about 10 Quality clips a month, or roughly 50 Fast clips at 20 credits each. A three-minute song cut entirely in 8-second Veo shots needs about 23 clips before retakes, so Pro alone won't carry a full video. Ultra ($99.99 per month for the 5x tier, billed monthly only) raises that to 10,000 credits and halves the Fast and Lite rates. Our Veo 3.1 music video tutorial walks through the Flow workflow step by step.

Veo's weakness is the same as its strength: eight seconds. You will be cutting every two bars whether the song wants it or not.

How do you move a Sora workflow to Seedance without starting over?

Export first, then rebuild your character from stills, then regenerate at 720p before you spend on resolution. The order matters because the export window is finite and the reference images are what carry your identity across tools.

  1. Export everything from the sunset page. Go to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, click Export, wait for the email. Store the archive in two places.
  2. Pull reference frames. From your best Sora clips, screenshot 6 to 12 clean frames of the artist: front, three-quarter, profile, full body, the outfit you want to keep. These become image references in Seedance. A dozen consistent frames beats fifty mixed ones.
  3. Rebuild the character once, then reuse it. Generate a short neutral test clip with your references and no music. Check the face, the hands, the clothing. Fix the references until the test holds. Only then start on the song.
  4. Cut the song into sections, not shots. Seedance's 30-second standard clip maps to a verse or a chorus. A three-minute track is six to eight generations plus retakes, not thirty. Write one prompt per section and keep the camera language consistent.
  5. Generate at 720p, upscale the keepers. At the rates on Dreamina's page, a full pass of a 180-second song is about $6.30 in generated seconds at the promotional rate. Plan for three passes. Upscale only the shots that make the final cut.
  6. Mute the generated audio in the edit. Lay your master underneath. Generated sound is useful for timing, not for release.

If your Sora project leaned on the public character feature, where other people generated clips of you, there is no equivalent. Seedance, Kling and Veo all treat references as private inputs. For a musician that is mostly good news.

What should you do about guides and tutorials that still say Sora?

Read the date, then read the pricing section. Any guide published before the Sora shutdown announcement on March 24, 2026 was written in a world where Sora existed; any guide that still quotes Sora pricing in October 2026 has not been maintained. We are keeping our own older Sora pages online as a record of what the tool did, with a note at the top pointing here.

The useful test for any AI video guide this year is whether the prices carry dates. Dreamina's own pricing page lists an August 2026 rate of $0.097 per second as a historical figure beside its current $0.035 campaign rate. Kling's first-month discount differs from its renewal. Google's Flow help page says, in its own words, that limits are subject to change at any time. A number without a date is a guess.

If you only take one action from this page, make it the export. The rest can wait a week. That cannot.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sora completely shut down in 2026?+

Yes. OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and mobile apps on April 26, 2026 and removed the Sora API, including sora-2 and sora-2-pro, on September 24, 2026. OpenAI's deprecation table lists no replacement model, and the company told the BBC it is leaving video generation to focus on other work, including robotics.

Can I still download my Sora videos?+

As of late September 2026, OpenAI's help center still points to an Export button at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, with an email sent when the archive is ready. OpenAI says all Sora data will be permanently deleted after any final export window closes, so export now and keep two copies. Exports are finished renders, not editable projects.

What is the closest replacement for Sora for music videos?+

For most musicians, Seedance 2.5. It generates 30-second clips in standard mode, 180 seconds in a beta long-video mode, accepts up to 50 reference inputs including audio, and was priced at $0.035 per generated second at 720p on Dreamina's September 2026 offer. Kling 3.0 is better for shot-by-shot storyboards and 4K; Veo 3.1 suits short polished moments.

How much does it cost to make a 3-minute music video without Sora?+

A 3-minute song is about 180 generated seconds. At Dreamina's September 2026 promotional rate of $0.035 per second, one full pass is about $6.30 before retakes; plan for three passes. On Veo 3.1 Quality, 23 eight-second clips cost about 2,300 Flow credits, more than Google AI Pro's 1,000 monthly credits. Kling prices 660 credits as about 33 short 720p videos.

Did Sora's Disney characters ever launch?+

No. Disney announced a three-year licensing deal and a $1 billion investment in December 2025, but the BBC and TechCrunch both reported the partnership was wound down when Sora closed in March 2026, and Reuters reported that no money had changed hands. No current music video tool offers licensed Disney, Marvel or Star Wars characters.

Can I get a refund for a Sora subscription or credits?+

OpenAI directs refund questions to its standard ChatGPT subscription refund process, so eligibility follows those rules rather than a Sora-specific policy. Purchased ChatGPT or Sora credits were not refunded automatically, but OpenAI says they can still be used for Codex, its coding tool. Check your billing history before the account data is deleted.
